What happens when designers and scientists join forces? The campaigns that the planet actually needs.
As part of Melbourne Design Week 2025’s theme, ‘Design the World You Want,’ Colabs and Your Creative are hosting a workshop that bridges the gap between science and communication design.
The challenge we’re tackling
It all comes down to translation. Science speaks its own language, one trapped in academic papers and technical jargon. When it tries to flow into everyday channels, we get miscommunication or worse… complete disinterest. The connection with real people gets lost.
Meanwhile, creatives with storytelling superpowers aren’t typically swimming in scientific circles. They’ve got the juice, they just don’t have access to the communities that desperately need their expertise.
Working with Colabs, we discovered how surprisingly simple (and ridiculously fun) it is to fix this disconnect. Which brings us to…our workshop.
Design Doing: Not just thinking, but making
We’re bringing together designers, strategists, and scientists for an evening of ‘design doing’. Expect sticky notes, big ideas, bio-tech, and probably a kombucha.
You’ll form cross-disciplinary teams, dive into design mapping, develop messaging frameworks, and create concepts that put science in the spotlight. It’s about breaking down complexity together—transforming the scientific into the accessible, the academic into the engaging.
This workshop welcomes participants of all backgrounds, abilities, and life experiences. Especially those who share our vision of using design as a catalyst for scientific communication. Join us where science becomes the hero, and design becomes the storyteller it deserves.
Wed 21 May | 5pm to 8pm | Colabs, Brunswick
